Hi Ed,
I decend from William, brother of Wilson. This line stayed in
Reynolds Co
Mo. and is where all my family still lives. My grandfather moved
to
Jefferson Co and that is where my father and uncle and all the
kids still
live. My aunt and other uncle moved back to the Oates/Black area
when
they became adults, I guess the pull was just to strong. What is
ironic
is my Grandparents retired to Branson (Tablerock Lake) and are
buried
there. I have yet to figure out why Eliz Allen Mathes moved to
Taney/Stone Co. There wasn't the huge recreational lakes to draw
them
there!! Branson certainly wasn't the country music mecca it is
today!!
It is beautiful country but??? They are in 1840 Ripley Co MO
including
David. 1850&1860 Taney Co Elizabeth and children only. There
is a J
Allen living next door to Eliz in 1850 he is 6 yrs older,
possibly a
brother, and some younger Allen's also within a few houses.
As you can see I have no death dates or places for Squire and
siblings. I
assume if there were no headstones they are at the bottom of the
lake.
Nor do I have children other than Wm. Some children are listed in
census
but haven't put them all together yet.
I got some info from a person who said Squire's mother was Mary
Elizabeth
but I can't find that anywhere.
Are you from any of these areas?
I would like to go to the Stone Co courthouse and look at Eliz.

"Bushwhacked in Douglas County, Missouri. The story from
great aunt Mildred is Wm. Mathes was in southern Missouri
somewhere with his family and sent them to Reynold County. He
never made it back. He may have been in the military. Years
later, Allen went to Douglas Co. looking for his father. He met
the man who buried his father and was taken to the
gravesite."

Excerpts from a letter dated 1969, McKinley Wilson Smith:
"The original ancestors of Squire Wilson Mathes and Sarah
Ann Pritchard were of Scotch Irish descent as the names would
indicate and were uneducated and very poor as indicated by the
fact that they were released from debtors' prison in England and
deported to Virginia to help establish a colony for the British,
where they became indentured slaves to colonial plantation
owners."
"Both Grandfather Smith and Grandfather Mathes served in the
Union or Northern Army and were strong Republicans. Grandfather
Mathes said, 'I would vote the Republican ticket if it was headed
by a "yaller dog" and he would do just that in
preference to a Democrat."

From a letter written in 1969 by his son, McKinley Wilson Smith:
"...my father, Sherman Tecumseh Smith, was the only one of
this family that received any formal education. After receiving
as much training as was possible at the Cove School nearby, he
went to Little Rock, Arkansas for advanced studies at a teachers
college and returned to Boston (Arkansas) and taught his first
term of school at age seventeen. Shortly before 1900, he acquired
a general store at Boston, Madison County in the heart of the
Boston Range of the Arkansas Ozark Mountains and about seven
miles from where he was born. Boston, now on State Highway 16,
was a small village at this time, consisting of two stores,
blacksmith shop, post office, and five dwelling houses. Sherman
Tecumseh was the postmaster."

"On March 4, 1896, William McKinley...became the 25th
President of the United States. I was born July 20, 1896 and was
given the name of McKinley in honor the new President and Wilson,
honoring my Grandfather Mathes. I have been told that someone in
the family wrote to President McKinley, telling that a new baby
boy had been named in his honor and that the President sent me a
pair of baby shoes and a letter of thanks in his own handwriting.
President McKinley was reelected for a second term that began
March 3, 1901. At that time I was about 3 1/2 years old and
Grandpa Mathes taught me to say 'Hurrah for McKinley, he's the
man, I can't vote but my Grandpa can!'....I have also been told
that Grandpa and Grandma Mathes had a large framed and glass
enclosed picture of the President hanging on the wall of their
living room and that ont he day of the assassination of the
President, his picture fell from the wall and was
shattered."
